Passo Pramosio

Passo Pramosio is a mountain pass in the Carnic Alps, on the border between Italy and Austria, known for its historical heritage, alpine landscapes and hiking opportunities.

 

Geographical location: The pass is located near Paluzza (Udine), in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, at an altitude of about 1,792 metres;

How to get there

- From Paluzza, follow state road 52 bis towards Cleulis, then take a dirt road of about 8 km through the Pramosio Forest, which can be travelled by car (a vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended);

- By mountain bike, a route starts from Paluzza, passing along mule tracks and cart tracks with moderate gradients, until reaching the Morgante refuge and the Avostanis lake.

 

Activities and routes Hiking

Main trails:

CAI 402: Connected to Malga Pramosio, it leads to Lake Avostanis (1,936 m) in 1.5 to 2 hours, across meadows and views of the surrounding peaks;

CAI 448 and 448A: More demanding routes up to Monte Cuestalta (2,198 m) and Creta di Timau (2,217 m), with exposed sections and remains from the First World War.

Traverse to Monte Scarniz (2,118 m): A panoramic route along ridges rich in alpine flowers and history.

Difficulty level:

Up to Lake Avostanis: T (tourist).

Towards Creta di Timau: EE (for experienced hikers), with a final section equipped with a metal cable.

Mountain biking

The ascent to the pass is popular with bikers, with technical descents along single tracks and views over the But valley.

 

Services and facilities

Malga Pramosio: offers agritourism with typical dishes such as frico, polenta and malga cheese.

Large car park and shop to buy local products (yoghurt, ricotta, mature cheeses).

Refuges:

Casera Pramosio Alta (1,950 m): Can be used as a bivouac.

Rifugio Morgante: Intermediate stop for hikers and bikers.

 

Practical advice

Best time: June to October, avoiding winter snowfalls that make the area inaccessible.

Preparation:

Check weather and trail conditions before departure.

Bring sturdy shoes for rocky or snow-covered trails.
